Who needs a Gladiator?
No one comes close to the popularity of David Beckham. His cult like status is undeniable. His magnetic charisma is unmatched.
But for his entire glamour and celebrity image; his countrymen could not care a bit. David’s gladiator image in this Pepsi commercial a couple of years ago reminds me of what a nation needs from its players. Nobody needs a celebrity on the field who is projected as a gladiator that possesses the bravery and skill to carry their nation to the top, only to falter when back in reality. Nobody needs a player whose greatness is about his fashion rather than his play.
The nation, fans and the world deserves a true blooded warrior that will fight until the very end of each game. Someone who can finish off their opponents.
Aside from the gladiator picture of Beckham, we haven’t really seen the instincts that could bring England to the promised land, although recently he has shown some amount of leadership, boosting England’s morale as we approach FIFA World Cup competition.
Any team definitely needs a Gladiator. The real deal we mean.
